Presumably this would have been by bombing and not boots on the ground. In December 2015 it won a vote in the Commons to take action against ISIS in Syria by bombing. We continue to supply our "friends" - or is it business customers? - Saudi Arabia with whatever equipment we can arrange to sell them in order for them to attack other countries, notably Yemen. It doesn't seem to bother us that this is to them a religious war - Sunni against Shia. No matter that they bomb ports that import food, hospitals, schools. No, keep the blinkers on; see nothing.

And so it goes, on and on and on. We have blood on our hands as long as we continue to be a country that does so little to get people to meet and discuss how to live alongside each other without war and yet so much to help increase our trade in warfare, be it aircraft, bombs, or whatever. Money, money, money - that comes first. And the refugees that result from this? Oh no, they're nothing to do with us, are they? How dare they try to come here to live a better life? Yes, we have to keep a sense of proportion - ensure our ties are done up tightly, our suits are the right colour, we bend our knees sufficiently to the queen and bow our heads low enough at the Cenotaph once a year. "We" go to church on Sundays and call ourselves good Christians and say this is a wonderful country to be proud of. Thou shalt not kill? No, never heard that one. Where did that come from?

You could have mentioned Bush and Blair and their "Shock and Awe" bombing of Iraq. Will they ever be summoned to The Hague to answer for the lives they took in our name? Yes, it helps to keep a sense of proportion, but when we close our doors to children who are refugees - especially when this country has made profits from the weapons used to drive them from their countries - it's difficult. Very difficult. And I'm not sure that I can keep a sense of proportion, look into my eyes in a mirror and not see a hypocrite looking back at me.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
